POST HISTORY

By the autumn of 1945, military veterans were returning home from overseas service in World War II.  Many of the veterans who had returned to Jasper urged the VFW Department of Alabama to assist in the organization of a Post in Jasper.  Department of Alabama Commander Joe Denaburg heeded these calls and assigned two World War II veterans, Raymond J. Isley and L.M. Martin, to organize a VFW Post in Jasper.  On October 25, 1945, a meeting was held for overseas veterans of both World Wars at the USO Center on Third Avenue with goal of organizing a new Post.  The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States issued  the charter for Marvin Lee Ferguson Post 4850 on October 28, 1945.  Charter members of Post 4850 were:

Post member Lucious "Sonny" Richardson, longtime Veteran Service Officer for Walker County, was instrumental in the organization and execution of Jasper's Veterans Day Parade for many years.  His extensive records of the parade, covering the years 1980 through 2000, are now held in the Heritage Room of the Jasper Public Library.  Post 4850 continues to organize the annual parade to this day.
